Transports: How your support helps us reach more animals
In addition to my role as Board President at Northwoods Humane Society, I also help as a transport volunteer many times a year. This means that I drive the Northwoods van to our partner in Minneapolis, Safe Hands, or local airfields to meet planes from organizations like Last Chance for Korean Dogs, to pick up dogs and puppies they have brought from other areas. It is very rewarding to be able to help other rescues when we are able.
At Northwoods, most of the dogs and cats who find new homes through us come from our community, either as strays or from people who not able to keep their beloved pet. But because animals typically spend only a short time with us before they find their ‘furever’ homes – an average of 20 days for dogs and 30 days for cats- we are often able to take in animals from other rescue organizations in Minnesota and farther away so they have room to help more.

In 2025, Northwoods welcomed 264 dogs and cats from other rescues like Safe Hands in Kentucky, Last Chance for Korean Dogs, Espanola Humane Society in New Mexico, and local partners Companion Animal Control, Minneapolis Animal Care and Control, Hero’s Heart, and Gratitude Farms.
No matter how an animal arrives at Northwoods, each one receives an exam, vaccinations like distemper and rabies, and a needs assessment so we can provide individualized care. Then our surgery team spays or neuters every pet that needs it. It usually just takes a few days until they are ready to be adopted into their new family.
Your support means a great deal to us because it means we can continue to help so many dogs and cats find their ‘furever’ homes! Much appreciation from our dogs, cats, staff and volunteers!

Northwoods 2025 in Numbers
For a relatively small shelter, the volunteers and staff at Northwoods make a BIG difference in the lives of thousands of animals and people each year. From dog walkers to vet care, cat socializers to event support, our impact far outpaces our size. See more below…
